The Values That Define Mihai Firulescu: Empathy, Balance, and Perseverance

Maybe we don’t realize it in time, but the values that define us as people take shape in the simplest moments: in how we react when someone needs help, in the way we listen, in the energy we put into things that don’t bring “praise,” but meaning. That’s how Mihai Firulescu’s story began—during his student years at West Gate Studios, in a vibrant and complex environment where every day came with a new challenge and a subtle lesson about what it means to be human among humans.

Campus life, truly lived

Every day, Mihai was among students from all corners of the world at West Gate, sharing the campus life with them. With the support of Mihai Boite, he learned how to manage a community. And Ioan Bejan was there—a man who listened, guided, and encouraged him to try, even when the ideas weren’t very clear. Together with the Resident Assistant and Resident Advisor teams, Mihai Firulescu organized events, managed activities, and became, without realizing it, a true catalyst for community.

Where it all begins: listening to others

At West Gate Studios, in a multicultural community of 1,800 students, Mihai didn’t rush to stand in the spotlight. He began by being present, by listening, by asking what the needs were—and especially, by acting.

Whether it was about organizing a cultural evening or supporting a colleague at the start of their journey, Mihai shaped a set of life principles he still holds today: empathy is not a choice, but a way of looking at the world.

In a field where numbers and deadlines dominate conversations, the consistency of values makes the difference. Analyzing the activity of Mihai Firulescu, it becomes clear that empathy, balance, and perseverance are not mere declared principles, but applied tools in daily decisions.

The balance between initiative and patience

He was the kind of person who saw beyond appearances and found joy in bringing people together. That’s why so many social and cultural projects came to life around him—because he understood what was missing and had the courage to try to fill that gap.

What made Mihai different was not his energy—many students are enthusiastic. What truly mattered was balance. He didn’t force things and didn’t seek validation. He simply followed his intuition and patience, building others’ trust step by step.

This inner calm, carefully cultivated during his student years, helped him define a form of leadership that doesn’t intimidate, but inspires. It doesn’t impose, but invites. He is the kind of leader who gives you space to be yourself, but also extends a hand when you need it. He was there when things were tough. He was also there when no one seemed to notice.

The quiet perseverance that makes a difference

Many remember Mihai as the person who never said, “It can’t be done.” He had a discreet, but unshakable form of perseverance. If a project didn’t work out the first time, he tried again. If an idea seemed “too much,” he tried to make it real. He didn’t give up, but he also never stepped over others.

These qualities facilitated the building of stable teams and generated an organizational culture where predictability and transparency are directly felt by partners and investors. The result is a climate of trust that supports financial performance.

He understood early on that life principles are non-negotiable. That you can be kind and firm at the same time. That you can build great things without raising your voice.

And perhaps that is why, even today, many of his colleagues from that time speak about him not through numbers or titles, but through the way he made them feel: understood, heard, motivated.

Do you also have values that define you?

If you feel that empathy, balance, and perseverance are part of your path, maybe it’s time to start a conversation that matters. Mihai Firulescu believes that real leadership begins with people who stay true to their values—even when no one applauds them.
